Suledo Forest ARR

A collaboration between the Suledo Forest Community Trust, the Nature Restoration Company (NRC), and The Green Branch. Planning to restore thousands of hectares of miombo forest in Tanzania and provide local income sources through alley cropping, the Suledo Forest ARR project is a large-scale restoration initiative co-designed with local communities to regenerate degraded woodlands, enhance biodiversity, and build sustainable rural economies for Maasai communities.

Spanning thousands of hectares, the Suledo Forest ARR project is a large-scale restoration initiative co-designed with local communities to regenerate degraded woodlands, enhance biodiversity, and build sustainable rural economies.

Project design and unique impact

We guide you through each stage of the project development lifecycle:

Forest by the people, for the people

A community-led approach centered on land rights and local ownership.

High-value impact

Combines carbon, biodiversity, and regenerative agriculture to unlock multiple revenue streams.

Scalable solution

Over 10,000 hectares targeted for restoration with potential for regional replication.

The Story.

Together with the Nature Restoration Company, we aim to connect African communities to the global carbon market through Nature-Based Solutions. In partnership with the Suledo Forest communities and the Suledo Forest Community Trust, we are restoring degraded forest in Kiteto District, northern Tanzania.

The Suledo Forest ARR project (Mradi wa Jamii wa Suledo wa Hewa Kaboni in Swahili) initially focuses on native tree planting to restore degraded miombo ecosystems, and itaims to unlock additional value through diversified income streams such as agroforestry and non-timber forest products. For the local Maasai pastoralist communities, the Suledo Forest is a crucial grazing ground during the dry season. By invitation of the community, NRC and The Green Branch are supporting local efforts to restore this vital landscape while generating income from carbon and nature-based value chains, and allowing for the reintroduction of sustainable grazing practices in the long-term.

We are now seeking early-stage funding to kickstart implementation. Join us in catalyzing a nature-positive, community-driven future for Suledo.

Partner

With field experience across several African countries, NRC serves as the on-the-ground lead partner for this project.

The Green Branch supports project development through certification and investor engagement, ensuring alignment with international carbon and biodiversity standards.

Environmental impact.

The Suledo project rehabilitates land degraded by overuse, drought, and uncontrolled conversion of forest to agricultural land. Restoration activities will:

  • Reforest 10,000 hectares using native Miombo and Acacia tree species
  • Protect endangered species and reestablish ecological corridors
  • Improve water retention and soil health through regenerative methods

Community Involvement.

The Suledo project is truly a community-led and community-owned initiative, resulting in strong and lasting impact by:

  • Creating jobs for local women and youth in planting, nursery management, and crop production
  • Reviving traditional honey value chains with a cooperative-owned processing facility
  • Ensuring 80% of net proceeds return to participants, with 20% directed to a village fund for education, infrastructure, and livelihoods

Invest in nature, restore the planet.
